The newest pearl in Goa’s oyster is the gorgeous W Hotel, poised between an emerald green jungle and Vagator Beach. If you decide to stay here on your next trip – and you should! – we’re sure you’d like to know this: The W is spread across 25 acres of beach land against the backdrop of a 500 year old Portuguese fort, with 160 rooms including villas, chalets, a Marvelous Suite and something called the WOW Villa, which is an address everyone should aspire to.

But if you aren’t sleeping over, you should know that there are plenty of reasons to visit The W Hotel. There are pool parties, occasion bashes (they had a smashing New Year’s Eve one to bring in 2017), the Clarin’s Spa, plus bars and restaurants, all of which can be accessed by non-guests. Too excited to breathe? There’s an oxygen room in the spa.

Our favourite reason to visit though, is steamed and redolent with lemongrass, and it’s called Spice Traders.

This, W Hotel’s Pan Asian restaurant, has stellar food – many of Goa’s gourmands have already been more than once – serving Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Sri Lankan and Vietnamese specialties. This would be a good time to curry favours.

It works if you’re travelling with family and friends, and turns magical on a date, considering Spice Traders’ terrace setting overlooking the sea, and the option of private dining. Just for you and your dumpling!

Thai Me Up: What To Order

The man in charge at Spice Traders is chef Tanveer Kwatra, who comes to Goa from Melbourne and has worked with culinary giants like Michael Bannerman, April Bloomfield, Fergus Henderson, Philip Moucheil and Andreas Gober.

If you ask him, he will recommend the specials, and you know you can’t go wrong with any of these orders: baked Singapore chili crab, Hunan steamed Chilean sea bass, Fantastic Shrooms, duck chachan.

End with orange cheesecake and stroll home happy and satiated, just like a trip to Goa should leave you. If you have a room upstairs, you might want to change into your bathing suit and hit The W’s Rock Pool, perched above the ocean on a rocky hill, the perfect place to write your holiday cliff notes.

Getting there: Spice Traders, W Goa – Vagator Beach, Bardez, Goa, visit their website here, for reservations call 0832 671 8888.
