During long weekend at the beach, we found half-priced taxis, stormy weather and Art Café Parra, a new café-plus-boutique by German designer Miriam Strehlau, who previously ran her store out of Greek restaurant Thalassa.

Pretty and inexpensive, Miriam wants Café Parra to take diners back to the old Goa, the one minus fine dining restaurants, where food was simple, tasty and affordable.

The result? Vegetarian Goan thalis (yes, yes we know, but give them a shot – they’re yum), made with ingredients that are available in the market that day. For as cheap as Rs 150, we got Goan dal, rice, two bhajis, pickle and papad. This washed down with a ton of beer, turned out to be one of the yummiest meals of our trip. And if a fruit is particularly fresh in the market, like apples you’ll get apple cake, apple pancakes and apple juice with or without vodka.

After a huge meal, we returned to Villa Capella where we were staying (also a lovely recommendation). Rented out by the owners of Italian restaurant J&A’s, this house has a sort of heart-shaped pool; an Honesty Bar (unmanned and stocked with alcohol and a book where you note down what you drink); gorgeous dogs, fur ball cats and fun owners.
