Why must we still make our heads rest against cushions with ‘Basanti’ scrawled across them; purse our lips against technicoloured Buddha coffee mugs; hold on to iPad sleeves with pictures of vintage cars. Why?
Carts of overdone kitsch crowd Dorje Doma Designs, Colaba’s new lifestyle store that sits under a beautiful arch next to The Table. This colour riot will force your eyes to focus on the plain wooden photo frames clustered together on one wall, cowering, afraid they might be asked to hold snapshots of the psychedelic store. If taken, these would reveal silky, shiny pillow cases of Chinese silk and film prints including James Bond, The Godfather and Bollywood dons. There’s also patterned trays, pop-art clocks, ornate bells and a fun roll of Sudoku toilet paper. Yes, we’re puzzled why products like this are still being sold in 2012.

You will be too, but don’t leave the store just yet. Stay and ask for owner Zenden, who also runs an interior design service for homes and offices, making some pretty neat furniture from scratch. There are cool skeletal chairs where bum cushions extend down to the floor, a revolving book case, concealed bar and this super cool lego couch.
Could this be the build up we were looking for?
