If Gabriel romanticised cholera, Gabriella designed a coat to match it: lavishly green and cut from velvet, it can be worn until the love of your life comes around, even if it means you have to wait for years. Does anyone else smell bitter almonds?
We slip it on – luckily, the weather cooperates – and walk around South African model and designer Gabriella Demetriades’ new Bandra store, Deme. You’ve probably seen the label retailing on Pernia’s Pop Up Shop and sashaying down the red carpet with unbelievably long legs attached, most recently on Lisa Haydon. Just a few days ago, Kareena Kapoor wore an olive Deme maxi with a risqué thigh-high slit, which caused BuzzFeed India to refer to the actor’s current pregnancy period as the second fly-mester.
Gabriella drops names only after being coaxed, hoping that Deme’s designs will be draw enough. Well we’re here and we find that it’s hard to work a Gabriella-made maxi unless you, well, look like Gabriella: six feet something, bony and brawny in all the right places, brows on fleek. She’s dressed like she’s on her way to work out, and a Raw Pressery beet juice hangs around the store, both testaments to her I-didn’t-wake-up-like-this defense.

Matching the juice is a maroon velvet camisole, another in a shade of purple that rockstars would prefer (great for layering); and a forest green off-the-shoulder velvet baby doll dress that would look darling on you. Once you’re done purring over these, complete your Keith Richards look with Gabriella’s leather pants and biker jackets, currently available in a rust colour, but these can be customised for shade and size. “My personal favourite is the metallic bomber jacket. But if I like it, chances are that others won’t.”
She’s kind of right, because we don’t see ourselves in the gold jacket she holds up, nor can we picture wearing a lot of the maxis here with cut-aways that need abs and scooped backs your pilates instructor would be proud of. “My dresses are minimal and sensual,” Gabriella tells us. Some of them though, are too drape-y for our liking, don’t feel like they were cut from the best cloth and worse, a few look pre-owned which means they’ve probably returned from a shoot. A crisper, cleaner display would make all the difference.
The good news is that Deme’s new line is meant to be “less drapey and more pret”, with off-the-shoulder hakoba sheaths, long plaid jackets, denim crop tops and high-waisted skirts covered in black tassels.
Come back soon, we’re told, when the store porch will serve coffee and beet juice (of course) and the weather will nudge you towards the rust leather pants that today’s humidity forbids.
Getting there: Deme by Gabriella, Perry Cross Road, off Carter Road, Bandra (W), call 9920878487, Rs 10,500 for leather pants.
