Delhi lifestyle store Shades of India has a new Bandra address, and here’s a blanket rule to follow if you visit: head straight to the bedding section.
A precarious open elevator with thigh-high shutters takes you to the home division on a mezzanine, so those prone to dizziness will have to make do with the apparel section on the ground floor. It didn’t excite us much, Indian outfits with indelicate applique work. Organza and silk kurtas and saris – see pretty green leaf print – are almost ours until we notice a piping, a tassel, a ghungroo tie we don’t like. We have however, put a pin in a gold tissue kurta and an organza dupatta for Diwali.

But there’s no point crying over spilt silk. Slip upstairs instead and get major feels from cotton tasseled quilts in colours of kheer and kesar, the best kind of Diwali sweets for the season. Also sprawled on a bed here are textured sheets in icy hues, ivory and black cushion covers with pinched stripes, and ropey curtain ties.
And made especially for a tough day, is a pillowcase covered entirely in shells. Hold it to your ear and you might hear the ocean – a 7 second beach getaway for when you’re crest-fallen.
Getting there: Shades of India, 185 Waterfield Road, opposite China Gate, Bandra (W), approximately Rs 6,000 for a quilt.
