You there sitting at your desk, close your eyes and imagine the beach vacation of your dreams: there will be private pools and wide, plush loveseats; throbbing ocean views and dinners lit by tiki lamps; furry bath robes and deep bathtubs, private villas with open verandahs.
Welcome, dear reader, to Amanwella in Tangalle, Sri Lanka.
Set along a pristine beach way down south on the Sri Lankan coast, Amangalla is a contemporary, minimalist, sexy hotel, comprising of private villas, a super cool library, a bar that makes awesome arrak cocktails, a restaurant with a good hand for appams and the longest infinity pool we’ve ever seen.
The villas themselves are sprawling, with huge terraces, private pools and big bathrooms, shaded by champas and spikey cacti, and accessible only via narrow paths that are navigated using the cutest autos ever, kitted out with friendly drivers and white patent leather upholstery. Most of them have breathtaking ocean views. In other words, you’ll never want to leave.
But leave you must, if only to go down to the beach, pink-sanded and pristine, with a pretty cove and dotted here and there with deck chairs and drinks. Remember to ask about the best spots to get in though: the sea here is frisky, and if you run in like we did, you’ll likely get pounded (like we did).
The hotel offers a spectacular breakfast, interesting lunches and a romantic dinner on the beach, if you ask in advance. The staff is friendly but discreet, and super efficient, all looked over by a dapper young manager in wireframe glasses, who’ll have a cocktail with you and dish on the best Amans in the region, along with where to get a peacock-coloured lungi.
We’re already planning our next trip. Perhaps we’ll see you there, walking into the sunset?
