It's a bit of a cliche now, but still a collective dream: that Goa beach wedding. And in that fantasy you play so often in your head, the dress is imagined in far more detail and with much more fondness than the groom is. Hand embroidered with beaded Chantilly lace, a full length net train trailing behind you. Did you wake up and walk into a store, only to be drowned in swathes of ugly embellished tulle and strange drapes?
Your Vera Wang dream might just be realized with homegrown prêt and couture label Karleo, manned by Karan Berry and Leon Vaz. We can call them the Wedding Cashers.
While designing for a theatre artist, Karan and Leon customised a bridal gown in dandelion yellow; and gave another client yellow boots to wear with her bridal gown to match her eclectic tastes.
I Certainly Do
Karleo started off as a consultancy that would curate head-to-toe looks for a Christian wedding, pieces that were intended for Indian markets but with international aesthetics. “But please don’t use that dreaded term – fusion wear. We prefer ‘modern Indian gown’,” Karan says.
Currently not retailing and working on a project basis, Karleo engages with clients every step of the way, customising colours, fabrics, designs, cuts, embellishments, accessories and jewelry. Their hands-on approach includes clients receiving a computer-generated design mock, an actual mock garment, a complete design file including the sketches, the fabric and other material samples along with the final ensemble.
For instance, while designing for a theatre artist, Karan and Leon customised a bridal gown in dandelion yellow; and gave another client yellow boots to wear with her bridal gown to match her eclectic tastes. “We like to create individual character pieces - avoiding crazy mass retailing.”
With plans to go online in a month or two, Karan and Leon currently work out of their Mahim Road studio, but out of state customers can correspond with them via email. Previous participants in lots of pop up stores in Bombay like the Vintage Garden, Karleo plan to officially launch their label with LFW Spring Resort 2014.
Of their pieces, we love a hand painted long silver jumpsuit paired with a tailored jacket and a star crystal headband for a beach wedding. Or a statement neckline on a mustard yellow gown, for a city reception. Materials they work with involve a lot of tulle, georgette, crepe, beads and crystals (some ethnic, some Swarovski).
Bring it on, beaches!
